Walking Through the Uncomfortable into God’s Peace: A Look at the Woman with the Jar of Perfume

She knew who she was; she knew what she’d done; she knew how she’d lived. Entering the home of a Pharisee would have been uncomfortable, to say the least. Add on to that the fact that the Messiah himself was visiting the Pharisee’s home and her appearance there seems even more unlikely. Yet, she felt compelled to go and nothing was going to stop her.

She carried with her an expensive jar of perfume for the sole purpose of pouring it out for Jesus. Many thoughts must have crossed her mind as she considered this humble, yet bold act. Would she be reprimanded? Would she be misunderstood? Would she be rejected? She had no way of knowing the outcome, yet she felt compelled to do it and nothing was going to stop her.

A Spirit-led walk of obedience led to a teachable moment for others and a much needed blessing for her.  Jesus understood. He knew her heart. He recognized her faith. He offered forgiveness for her many sins. He saved her and sent her away, into peace.

He desires the same for you and me.

Friend, what is it you’re feeling led to do? Where is it you’re feeling led to go?

Will you follow the Spirit’s lead? Will I follow as He leads me?

Will we pursue that which makes us uncomfortable? That for which the outcome is uncertain? That which places us in a position to be misunderstood, possibly even mocked, by others?

Will we follow the Spirit’s lead?

I pray that we will. There is no greater blessing than to walk in obedience, hand in hand with the One who understands, knows our hearts, recognizes our faith, offers us forgiveness, saves us and sends us out, into His peace.

And a woman in the town who was a sinner found out that Jesus was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house. She brought an alabaster jar of perfume and stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to wash his feet with her tears. She wiped his feet with her hair, kissing them and anointing them with the perfume.  Luke 7:37-38

And he said to the woman “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.” Luke 7:50
