Making Life Count

Make it count!

I shouted these words to my daughter as she ran down court, dodging opposing players. She had one purpose in mind – to sink the ball in the goal standing ahead of her. Moments before she had seized an opportunity to grab hold of that same ball. Once the ball was in her hands, she didn’t hesitate. She knew what needed to happen and she set out to make it happen. To make this opportunity count.

I’ve recited this phrase numerous times, encouraging my basketball loving kids to make the most of their time on the court. But today, those three small words linger in my mind, posing questions I can’t seem to shake. Am I following my own advice? Am I seizing the opportunities that lie before me? Am I moving forward without hesitation? Do I know what needs to happen and am I actively working to see that it does? Am I willing to run hard, dodging obstacles when necessary, keeping the goal in sight?

And then the question at the root of it all: Am I choosing to make this life count?

Am I choosing to inch forward when inching is the best I can do? To leap ahead when leaping is a possibility? To continually move, albeit slowly, in the right direction? One step, then another. Some easy, some tough. Each drawing me toward the prize awaiting at my journey’s end.

Knowing by the grace of God, I’ve done something right. Knowing my time here meant something to someone. Knowing this life I’ve been given has not been hidden away, but has instead been taken and shared and used to point others to God.

I pray at the end of this life, I can honestly say fear and failure did not hold me back. Not so others will be pleased with me, but to please the One who gave His all for me in the first place. May He not be disappointed in the life I’ve lived. May He find joy in the choices and progress I have made.

Friend, won’t you join me today? Let’s set out to make this day count. To make all our tomorrows count. To make every day of our lives count.

For good.

For Him.

For those He lovingly places in our lives who have yet to know Him.

And when we stand before Him, may He look at us and say, Well done, my good and faithful servant. You took what you’d been given and made it count.

“After a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. The man who had received five talents approached, presented five more talents, and said, ‘Master, you gave me five talents. See, I’ve earned five more talents.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Share your master’s joy.’” Matthew 25:19-21
