Loved and Special: That’s Who You Are

I remember the day we learned of my grandson’s heart defect. Shock over the news. Grief over what may not be. Tears for this little life that would come into the world struggling with more than many of us will ever endure. Yet, we were committed to him, to giving him the very best chance at life we could offer. We were committed to seeing him through the diagnosis. Committed to fully loving him – with every ounce of our being – even though our hearts trembled at the thought of what may lie ahead. We had yet to meet him, but our love for him was already evident. He was ours, and He was worth it.

Friend, God considers us worth it, too.

Just as we fell in love with our children and grandchildren long before they could reciprocate that love, God fell in love with us. It’s such a delicate notion to grasp today, just as it was in David’s day. In Psalm 8:3-4, David poses this question: “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?”

David was spot on. Who am I that God would even think of me? Who am I that He would care for me? That He would know the number of hairs on my head (Luke 12:7, Matthew 10:30). That He would keep track of my sorrows and collect all my tears (Psalm 56:8). That He would knit me together in my mother’s womb and set a magnificent plan in motion for my life (Psalm 139: 13, 16).

Because my license plate ends in VIP, I often tease my kids that I’m a very important person. But the truth is, I’m not all that special. Sure, I’m special to my family and close friends, but that’s nothing unusual. When it comes down to it, I’m simply an ordinary woman trying her best to make a difference in life, to do good, to love well — like most other women I know. No, I am nothing special. Or am I?

The truth is, when we belong to God, we are indeed special. We are beloved daughters of the One true King and He loves us so much! Not because of what we do -we could never do enough. Not because of how we look -although to Him we are a masterpiece. Not because of who we are on our very best days – our sin nature is present even then. God created us in His image and dwells within us. This is what makes us special.

He loves us dearly. And He loved us long before we ever knew to love Him.

Just as there was never any doubt of our love for Elijah, despite his diagnosis, there was never any question of God’s love for us, despite our issues and imperfections. He loved us. Period. He always has. He always will.

His great love for us causes Him to think of us as we think of our children; to care for us as we care for our children; to be present with us as we long to be present with our children. Even more so.

So who are we that He would think of us? We are His. And though we don’t deserve any special treatment, He lavishes His love upon us anyway. Because to Him, dear friend, we are special.
