Finding the Good in a Different Kind of Thanksgiving

Friend, how does Thanksgiving look for you?

For many of us, Thanksgiving looks different this year. Whether it’s the travel distance between our homes, a physical distance caused by a loved one’s passing, a choice to distance ourselves for health reasons, or an unresolved relational issue creating distance within the family. Distance seems to be a big part of Thanksgiving this year.

There’s a good chance you’re missing someone at your table this year, just as I am. There’s a good chance your heart hurts over their absence, just as mine does. The house will be quieter than usual. The empty chairs will be more. Yes, there’s a good chance you’ll notice these things, just as I will.

Though these things may be a real part of Thanksgiving this year, may we choose not to focus solely on what isn’t to be. May we choose to also find something to be grateful for in the midst of our hard, raw places.

It’s more than okay for our hearts to long for those we love – for their hugs and laughter and the feeling of home they evoke within us. But may we also choose to be thankful.

Yes, Thanksgiving looks different this year, but it’s still a day to express thankfulness. And though mine is shaping up much differently than I’d envisioned, I am still thankful.

I am thankful for technology that allows me to connect with my loved ones when we can’t be together in person.

I am thankful that today we are more healthy than not.

I am thankful for those who live within my home who are able to share this day with me.

I am thankful for a freezer and pantry full of food.

I am thankful thanksgiving isn’t limited to one particular day.

I am thankful for a Savior who is with us even when we can’t gather together. He is with every family member and friend I am missing today. Yes, He is there – loving us, comforting us, providing for us, giving us much to be thankful for.

Friend, what are you most thankful for today?

  1. ❤️ it’s actually been pretty relaxing. Everyone has a good excuse to not dine with that one uncle this year that’s always rude 😂 we stayed in our pajamas and loved the ones we love to love. The ones that are easy to love. I think it’s been my favorite thanksgiving, actually! Love to your family, from ours!
